I feel that the essence of art is its ability to transcend feelings, its ability to create an atmosphere of emotions, as well as to capture the attention of the viewer. It is similar to the effects we feel from music.
I have an urge and love to recreate the beauty and energy of nature. I feel like a sponge that takes in all impressions, encapsulates and preserves them somehow, and then delivers them through the medium of my choice, bringing in a part of myself. I strive to give homage to the beauty of nature.
I prefer to work with different mediums, as each one has its own mutual fascination. I favor acrylic and oil for detailed impressionistic and sometimes almost abstract nature scenes. I love watercolor works of old masters and use similar techniques for portraits of people, plants, and animals. But currently I am working mostly with scissors cuttings (Scherenschnitte). I create my paper cuttings in black and white because I like to concentrate fully on the composition and the dramatic effect of light versus dark. This is also the traditional form of this very old art form. The process is like woodcutting or sculpting, in that you start with a blank resource and create the art by simply cutting parts of it away. In either case, precision is paramount. Because of that, it demands full concentration. I am particularly enthused by this process when I succeed in making an extremely intricate cutting with lines that are no thicker than thread-width. All of my cuttings are cut out of a single sheet of paper. That means that the remaining design is still one piece of paper. The only instrument that I am using is a pair of small scissors.
